Neurosonography – ultrasound examination in real time, which provides a unique opportunity to visualize the structures of the brain in children during the first year of life, in the period before the closure of the large parietal lobe.
With the help of this procedure, the maturity and degree of development of the cerebral gyri are evaluated according to the gestation period. Congenital defects that occur during the laying and formation of the brain as a result of teratogenic factors, intrauterine infections or genetic abnormalities are verified, mainly in the first trimester of pregnancy. These are innate:
- hydrocephalus,
- holoprosencephaly,
- hydranencephaly,
- Dandy-Walker syndrome,
- Arnold-Chiari syndrome,
- agenesis of the corpus callosum,
- arachnoid cysts,
- volume neoplasms,
- vena Galen and others.
Acquired pathologies in the perinatal period are also detected. These are post-hypoxic, post-traumatic or spontaneous hemorrhages (subependymal, intraventricular, parenchymal, subarachnoid, subdural).
With hypoxic-ischemic lesions of the central nervous system, foci of encephalomalacia, porencephalic cysts, open schizencephaly are visualized.
With the help of dopplerography, the blood flow in the main vessels of the brain is evaluated according to the speed indicators and the resistance index.
All of the listed pathologies require dynamic monitoring. But if the child did not undergo neurosonography (NSG) in time, then after the closure of the brain, imaging of the brain is possible only by CT or MRI.
